In order to avoid damaging the vessel, clamps should apply exactly the amount of pressure required to stop bleeding and no more. In other words, it is important that the pressure along the jaws is evenly distributed and is as low as possible while remaining effective. Like all Stille forceps and clamps, the closing of the jaws at the distal part first ensures that pressure is evenly distributed with controllable force.
